What's in each cleaning kit

Here's a side-by-side look at our six cleaning kits. Find your instrument, check the contents, and compare them with your teacher's supply list.

Every kit includes cleaning instructions and a pencil. Trumpet, horn, trombone and saxophone kits also include a bonus item and a resealable plastic carrying case. Clarinet and flute kits come with a monster toy and a carrying bag. The ham sandwich is still not included.

A few things to check before ordering

Trumpet: The kit includes EcoPro Lite valve oil. If the player uses moving first and third slides, ask the teacher whether they also need trumpet slide oil.

French horn: The kit includes Lite Rotor Oil. Check whether the player's care routine also calls for a separate bearing/linkage oil. Have a teacher or repairer help with rotor-string replacement.

Trombone: Use the slide cream on the main playing slide and the grease on the tuning slide. If the instrument has a valve attachment, check its oil requirements as well.

Saxophone and clarinet: Check swab fit for the student's instrument, particularly for baritone saxophone or bass clarinet. Check the school's reed list as well; reeds are not listed in these kits.

Flute: The kit supplies two cleaning handkerchiefs. You'll also need the correct cleaning rod; check the case before ordering one.

Buying for a returning student

Take a quick look through last year's supplies. Brushes and cloths may still have plenty of use left in them. Replace anything worn or missing and top up the lubricant the player uses.
